The Donon Massif, with its altitude of 1009 m, constitutes the highest point of the lower Vosges, at the junction of the Alsatian and Lorraine provinces.
Since prehistoric times, because it is visible from afar, it has been attributed a sacred character that has never left it. Its location away from homes has encouraged the development of legends, mixing myth and reality. The Romans, mysteriously seduced, dedicated the site to Mercury. Feared by the first Christians, the Donon is said to have presided over Victor Hugo's design ever since. Under Napoleon III, a successful pastiche of an ancient temple crowned the summit.
